The Orlando Sentinel reported that Mayor Dyer mentioned the city’s interest during a radio interview that aired Wednesday.

“One thing I’ve been thinkng about is I think we need to determine some period of time that we leave it exactly as is with some adequate fencing… because there will be people that want to travel here to see it as it exists, without modification to it”. “People are traveling from all over the country, really all over the world”.

On Wednesday, Dyer toured the Pulse site with Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who is now visiting Orlando with his husband.

“If the City and the property owners jointly agree it is in the best interest of the community that the City acquires the property, then the City will move forward with that public process to do so”, said Cassandra Anne Lafser, spokesperson for Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. She emphasizes the talks are preliminary.

Flowers, posters and crosses remain at the site as tributes to the victims.

In the weeks after the massacre, mourners also left items at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Orlando Regional Medical Center and Lake Eola Park, many of which were gathered up and collected by the Orange County Regional History Center.

Through its social media, OnePulse Foundation says the permanent memorial is meant to provide “a sanctuary of hope dedicated to the lives affected and taken by the tragedy”.

Previous reports stated that Pulse was likely to become a permanent memorial, according to documents filed with the Florida Department of State Division of Corporations, but no plans have been confirmed.

On Sunday, the nightclub posted an announcement on Instagram that said the club would reopen as a memorial, before releasing a correction indicating the post was premature. Bettel is openly gay.

The nightclub where a gunman killed 49 people last month was the site of an apparent burglary according to an incident report distributed by Orlando police Thursday
