Will politics, social issues influence Emmy Awards outcome?

The 68th Emmy Awards ceremony is Sunday, starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Television’s biggest night will be hosted by late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel. The Red Carpet start time for the 2016 Emmy Awards is 2PM Eastern & 2PM Pacific.

For Lead Actor in a drama, Rami Malek from Mr. Robot is the likely leading Emmy nomination. The show will run too long; the in-memoriam segment will leave out someone you love; and an Emmy will go to someone you hate.

Not to worry, though: If you’re looking to impress your dog when you flip to the 2016 Emmy Awards while the latest episode of “Rob & Chyna” is on commercial, I’m here to help.

The popular medieval fantasy series enters the Primetime Emmys as the most-nominated show with 23 nods, including three in the supporting drama actress category and two in the supporting drama actor category. Star World, Star World HD and Star World Premiere HD have aired some of this year’s biggest nominees every weekend all month – be it Game of Thrones or Modern Family, Homeland or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and several more.

The 2015 Emmys were a historic one for Game of Thrones. It’s a broad portrayal, but submitting the affecting police brutality episode “Hope”, which showcased his vulnerability, should play well against the wonderfully nuanced Jeffrey Tambor, who won past year for playing a transgender woman trying to settle into her new life as her decision continues to unsettle those around her.

The form: Historically a tough category – television’s leading women are a strong pack – but Viola Davis’s win past year was historic and well-deserved. The top social moment a year ago on Facebook was when Viola Davis won for actress in a drama series for “How to Get Away With Murder”. Dinklage’s main competition for the trophy could be from fellow Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington, receiving an Emmy nomination for the first time.

In this great era the category of Outstanding Limited Series also has enormous clout and significance, a testament to the vigour of the form in TV right now.

The Americans, a show about Russian spies living in Washington in the 1980s, has been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Some shows that deserve nominations don’t get them; some that are nominated don’t deserve them; and the best shows don’t always win. A nominee himself, Kimmel tells The Hollywood Reporter magazine in this week’s cover story, “Mostly I just want to do well as host”. No one has had that many repeat victories in the category before, but another trophy would also make her the most-celebrated actress in the category in Emmy history as she’s now tied with Candice Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore with five wins each (Dreyfus has a previous win for The New Adventures of Old Christine).

Over the past 10 years, Constance Zimmer had recurring roles on television shows that received a combined 11 Emmy nominations for either Outstanding Drama Series, or, in the case of Entourage, Outstanding Comedy Series.

Emmy thumbed her nose at some of our favourite shows and performers this year. That “House of Cards” really belonged to Spacey’s co-star Robin Wright this season could edge Malek into the winner’s circle. The company is spending a reported $5 billion this year on its ever-expanding roster of original series and films.
