Will Smith joins Oscars boycott, says he won’t attend

With the swift backlash against the Oscars following the second consecutive year with zero minority nominees in the acting categories, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is expected to announce changes to make the Oscars more diverse – and soon.

She added, “I’m hoping we can find ways to step together in this instead of finding ways to fight each other”.

“So it’s about executives in cinema and film studios, television, cable networks, giving those storylines and those actors a fair bite”.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith arrives at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 10, 2016 in Beverly Hills, California. “We’d still be here having this conversation”.

“We’re part of this community but at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is okay”, Smith said of himself and the 44-year-old actress. But the circumstances facing Rock are far more complex, with a telecast a little over a month away, giving a replacement little time to prepare for what will be nearly certainly be the most hard balancing act in Oscar host history. “The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership”.

Yet such inclusions can only highlight the glaring failure on the part of the Academy, but more critically the industry as a whole, to create and endorse films with stories of colour at the forefront.

“I do support the Oscar Ban movement’s position that the nominations do not reflect the diversity of our community”, said Ruffalo.

The filmmaker Spike Lee has also said he will skip this year’s awards show. Women are not represented equally and fairly. So when I look at the series of nominations from the Academy, it’s not reflecting that beauty…

“We should be championing diversity, I don’t think it’s a big ask”.

Prometheus actor Rafe Spall said Idris Elba not being nominated for this year’s Oscars was a “notable omission”.

“Especially the last two years when there has been extraordinary performances by black actors”.

“I’m going to a Knicks game”, he said on ABC, referring to the NBA basketball team from NY.

She told Entertainment Tonight: “The problem is not with the Oscars. problem is with the Hollywood movie-making system”.
