Will Smith looks to reclaim throne as king of summer
There is a big new movie in town this weekend, and you’re going to see a lot of its characters over the next few weeks – even on your mobiles.

The character has now branched out to other TV shows, video games, her own comic book series and, of course, “Suicide Squad”, one of the most buzzed about films of the summer. Which is kind of sad, but I mean, at the end of the day, the things that are most important to me are time with family and doing the creative work.
For more on the behind the scenes drama of the film, head over to The Hollywood Reporter.
David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” has been getting a lot of harsh reviews from critics and it seems to have been just as divisive as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”.
Leto’s Joker is more unhinged and sociopathic than the late Heath Ledger’s in The Dark Knight, whose primary desire was to create chaos. Which is, to be frank, is a confoundingly reactionary way to make movies.
Ayer defended the movie, quoting Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata’s famous line translated as “I’d rather die standing than live on my knees”.
“Admitted, even with its flaws, at least “Suicide Squad” is trying to give diehard fans the kind of comic-book movie they’ve been waiting for this summer – freaky characters, great costumes, fistfights and firepower and the usual leave-a-city-in-ruins ending”.
Because Suicide Squad’s characters were expendable, they could be, and sometimes were, killed off. There have been whispers for a while now that Suicide Squad’s trailers were overselling the humor, and it seems they were true. Plus, he liked the idea of making a superhero movie about bad guys.
As with any high profile movie preceded by enormous hype, its prospects won’t be known until critics and audiences get to watch it.
On Wednesday evening, Affleck attended the London premiere of Suicide Squad, looking dapper in a simple, grey, well-tailored suit, white button-down, and a diamond-patterned grey and black tie. Instead, it zeroes in on the villains of the DC Universe – The Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith) Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and others.
“I needed these guys to feel like they are best friends on camera, to talk about their inner life and share secrets”, he says. Suicide Squad continues that effort in a manner that suggests imitation is the sincerest – and possibly most desperate – form of flattery. Even though the Joker is in it, and Batman is a couple times too: this is a weird title to make into a tentpole. Its triumph should be in NOT conforming to the norm. “It’s a really big deal to move a tentpole date”.
David Ayer, director of the highly anticipated DC film Suicide Squad, has apologized after yelling “fuck Marvel!” at the film’s premiere on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Smith’s kids are apparently not among the Suicide Squad haters!
