Will top court put up wall to immigration?

The administration also argued that waiting for a lower court to hold a hearing on the merits “would indefinitely prolong the disruption of federal immigration policy and would continue to deprive millions of parents of USA citizens and permanent residents of the opportunity for deferred action and work authorization”.

Announced by President Obama in November of 2014, these programs would allow millions of undocumented individuals to remain in the United States without fear of deportation and apply for a temporary work permit.

Texas has led the legal challenge to Obama’s program on behalf of 26 states and has won every round in court so far.

“But the chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, which filed a brief on behalf of scores of members of Congress opposing the deportation policies, said the Supreme Court will be taking up what he called a ‘landmark case involving the separation of powers”.

Organizers believe the majority came to the US when they were children or they have children that are now legal citizens. “That can only come from Congress. But it gives people three-year renewable visas, valid social security numbers and access to drivers’ licenses”.

If the Supreme Court rules that Obama violated and overstepped his authority, the Congress will be the only ones who can change and reform the immigration laws.

The President’s immigration program would help an estimated 5-million undocumented immigrants.

The immigration issue has confounded a politically deadlocked Congress and has emerged as one of the major flash points of disagreement between the Democrats and Republicans running for president.

Republican Donald Trump has proposed deporting all people who are living in the USA illegally, an idea embraced by some other GOP candidates and dismissed by others. White House assistant press secretary Brandi Hoffine said in an email the case affects “immigrants who want to be held accountable, to work on the books, to pay taxes, and to contribute to our society openly and honestly”.

“We applaud the court’s decision to hear the case, and we hope it fully considers the sound legal reasoning behind the President’s administrative relief”, he added.

A big announcement was made Tuesday from the United States Supreme Court.

“In a single year, Texas spent nearly $60 million on education costs stemming from unlawful immigration”, the state told the court.

The program was unveiled previous year wherein Obama suspended the deportation of as many as 4 million immigrant parents from the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans. She said Tuesday that she looks forward to the court’s final ruling in the case, which has been scheduled for an April hearing.

If the court rules in favor of the Obama administration, the president could start granting amnesty during his final months in office, a move that would surely escalate debate in a presidential contest already heavily focused on immigration.

“I think that this signals a step in the right direction”, said Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials.
