Willett’s win overshadowed by Spieth’s collapse
“He knows exactly how many majors Rory has won and he will want to get up there and past Rory’s tally”.

The 28-year-old became only the fourth British victor of the Augusta event on Sunday, taking advantage of Jordan Spieth’s final-round collapse to claim his first major title by three shots.
Future plans may include a JSU golf tournament named for Willett, whose friends on campus have earned their “masters” in gratitude. “I don’t think he’ll fit into it right now but he will grow into it”, Willett said. World number two Spieth closed the front nine with four birdies in a row, curling in a 21-footer to reach the turn with a five-stroke lead over Willett.
“It was a very surreal day when I look back at the ebbs and flows”, Willett said.
Willett had expected to miss the Masters because Zachariah was not due until April 10 but he arrived early on March 29, allowing his dad to be at the birth before flying to the US. “It’s going to be awesome to be in and around the best athletes in the world at their allotted sports; to speak to them and see how they go about their daily routines”. I came out and I just didn’t feel quite comfortable with my swing. Instead, as the defending champ, Spieth had to join Willett in Butler Cabin and present him with the champion’s green jacket.
“To keep me being the person I’ve worked hard to be. regardless of if I’ve played good golf or not”.
At least Spieth has no Masters monkey on his back having won at Augusta National past year.
“I grew sick to my stomach as Jordan made bogey on the last hole”, Greller wrote.
A quadruple bogey for the 22-year-old Texan was compounded by Willett’s strong finish, the vicar’s son from Sheffield making birdie at 16 and pars at 17 and 18, ending his tournament five under. Big picture, this one will hurt.
“A dream of mine was to win major championships and that’s what I dedicated myself to do, to work hard and gain that self belief it one day might happen and weirdly, three days ago, that’s exactly what did happen”. The SuperBook took 62 bets on Willett to win the Masters, and William Hill’s Nevada sportsbook took a $100 bet on the Brit in February at 150-1 odds.
“You strive for perfection every time you practise, every time you play”.
“The more you say it and things like this happen you start to realise just what we did and everything that’s going to go with it”, said the new world number nine.

“I hit some really good irons, but for the most part it was my ability to map out the course, my putting and my short game that pretty much had us in the lead”, Spieth said. Spieth failed in his bid to join Faldo, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as back-to-back Masters winners and missed a chance to overtake Australia’s Jason Day for the top ranking spot.
