During the group’s heyday, Guest sang background on hits, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Midnight Train to Georgia”.
Guest, a cousin of Knight, was a Pip from the group’s founding in 1953 until it disbanded in 1989 when Knight pursued a solo career.
Following Patten’s death in 2005, Guest continued to manage artists as CEO of his own label, Crew Records.
Rest in peace, Mr. Guest.
Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1996 and 2001 respectively. In one episode, comedian George Carlin made an appearance, playing the doo-wop song “Cherry Pie”, accompanied by William Guest, Edward Patten, and Bubba Knight.
Following the group’s breakup, Guest and Patten founded a production company.
