But Williams, 34, held off her opponent’s charge. It’s just a fun place to be and the crowd has always been really awesome for me. However she has destroyed any murmurs of her not being able to get back to her best as she has breezed through to the final.

This was against the fourth seed, who came into the Australian Open with four titles since Williams last played a match.

A BBC and Buzzfeed News report which coincided with the start of the Australian Open alleged 16 players – all ranked at some stage in the top 50 – had been flagged for being involved in matches where suspicious betting activity was detected.

Afterward, Williams seemed surprised by her performance. Most spectators – including a woman with a sign reading: “Just Married But Willing to Exchange for Federer” – were behind him, applauding Djokovic’s service faults and giving Federer a standing ovation when he broke to go ahead 4-2 in the third set. “Whether it was my elbow, my knee, or, in the final moments after a certain match in Flushing (Meadows), my heart”. “I was going out there today with a lot of confidence and trying to believe really in myself and just going for my shots, trying to play good tennis”. Does she feel a duty to her compatriot?

Heartbroken, Williams chose to retreat and regroup.

“I needed time off just to take a minute and just chill and re-heal, get ready”, she said after the 64-minute battering of the Pole.

Williams then put on a serving masterclass in the last game.

No stranger to adversity, Williams has emerged from setbacks many times in her career. The next year she suffered a shocking upset loss at Wimbledon to Russian teenager Maria Sharapova.

Williams would not run away with the set however. She traveled to Ghana and Senegal in 2006.

“Her being lefty definitely helps out as well”.

Australian Open 2016 from 18 January – 31 January 2016. She’s through to her 7th #ausopen final.

“Now that was my focus, to play better in the bigger one”.

Radwanska will be relatively pleased with her form after losing her first match this year having won her previous ten matches this year. She underwent foot surgery. She presents a completely different game, an extremely exciting game.

“She’s an incredibly tough player”.

Her father, Richard Williams, credits her upbringing for his daughter’s resolve.

In the dog-eat-dog world of competitive tennis, “sympathy” doesn’t feature in the dictionary. Running for their life!

Radwanska added: “Half of the match you just have no chance”.

Playing in her first semifinal, Konta fell behind early 3-0 before roaring back to take a 4-3 lead.

Novak Djokovic has won the second set 6-2 of his semifinal against Roger Federer after taking the first 6-1.

Radwanska’s fastest serve in the first game topped out at 140kph. Suddenly, it was 3-3. “You can’t underestimate Kerber”.

Kerber has beaten Williams once, in Cincinnati in 2012, but she has lost all of their other five meetings without winning a set.

With 21 Grand Slam wins, Williams is only one victory away from equalling the 22-Slam record of Steffi Graf, who like the American is considered one of the greatest to have ever played the game.

Kerber ended Sydney-born British player Johanna Konta’s surprising run with a 7-5, 6-2 semifinal win to reach her first Grand Slam final. If I don’t win on Saturday, I’ll still be one off. It took me forever to get to 18 (and draw level with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert). “I may as well give it my all”.
