Williams hit 12 aces during the match but admitted that she was aiming for placement rather than power.

“I knew there were a lot of aces because there was a period when nearly every serve was an ace”, Karlovic said.

Williams was asked Tuesday whether this edition of the U.S. Open might be a more pleasant experience than a year ago, without the same sort of history on the line.

“I don’t think I had any break points against me, which is very good”, the Scot said.

“I got off to a fast start because I knew she was a really tough opponent and I didn’t want to start out slow”, Williams said after the match.

Defending champion Djokovic and fellow two-time victor Nadal come into the season’s final Grand Slam with injury concerns. He returned at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this month, losing to Kei Nishikori in the bronze-medal match in singles and winning a gold medal in doubles with Marc Lopez. It’s been two years since neither reached the men’s final at a Grand Slam – that occurred at the 2014 U.S. Open. But had she won the championship in NY, too, she would have made it 4 for 4 within a single season, something no one had done since Graf in 1988.

World number one Djokovic, the 2011 and 2015 champion, admits he is “not 100 percent” after suffering a wrist injury on the eve of the Olympic Games where he was a shock first-round loser.

Williams led 5-2 in the third set, but the 22-year-old Kozlova pushed her to the limit in the 2-hour, 42-minute match.

Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion whose career was almost ended by three wrist surgeries, advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) victory over fellow Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

If you are looking forward to Serena’s match and are wondering when does Serena Williams play in the United States open, then you should know that she will be playing on Tuesday, that is, August 30, 2016.

Fifth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep also advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.

McHale has posted wins over former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and Grand Slam champions Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Halep says she wasn’t ideal, but pleased with how she played against the Belgian. Serena Williams has been the world’s No. 1 Tennis player and until now, there hasn’t been many who can match her determination and playing skills.
