Williams sisters’ French Open matches postponed

World number one Novak Djokovic has never triumphed in Paris.

With more bad weather expected Tuesday, French Open organizers are trying to get as many matches as possible out of the way before the rain.

After initial reports confirmed a roof over Roland Garros’ Court Philippe Chatrier would materialise in 2018, tournament director Guy Forget said the earliest date has now been pushed to 2020.

Djokovic and Bautista Agut originally were supposed to face each other Monday, when there was a complete washout of a day at Roland Garros for the first time in 16 years. “I have the feeling I played three matches against him”, said Djokovic, wearing courtside interviewer Fabrice Santoro’s yellow rain hat.

But the Serb quickly wrapped up the next two games today and despite falling a break down to trail 2-4 in the fourth, he stormed back to claim victory on a second match point. Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was a loser to unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

“I don’t care that I lost the match today, but I was close to getting injured with my back, so that’s a big problem”.

Roger Federer did just that in the 2009 men’s final when he beat Robin Soderling to win his solitary French Open trophy.

He was posing for photos with his fiancé in the Trocadero’s Warsaw fountains, across from the Eiffel Tower, said he was pleased despite – or maybe even because of – the driving rain. We have played in all sorts of conditions.

Weather conditions are set to improve on Wednesday which is traditionally the day when the quarter-finals are wrapped up. “Usually if the court is not fit for play, like if it’s slippery, they would cancel the match right away”, said Pironkova, who reached her first French Open quarterfinal.

He fails to find his rhythm from the offset and loses his first set of the tournament 6-3.

But the most obvious comparison of a player coming out onto court with some canopied rain protection was back in 1988, when a teenaged Andre Agassi did the same thing.

Elsewhere in the round four, Spain’s David Ferrer leads Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych 2-1 on serve in the early stages of their meeting, while unseeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis holds a 3-0 advantage over Belgium’s David Goffin in the first set of their encounter.

She will play defending champion Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal matches involving second-seeded Andy Murray of Scotland and ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet of France and defending champion and third-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain were moved to Wednesday.

In all, 12 singles matches – 10 fourth round ties and two men’s quarter-finals – were due to be played Tuesday.
