Williams sisters win sixth title in Wimbledon doubles final

“Of course, it’s one of my goals one day to be the number one”, she said.

“Its different, ” she said. With Venus’s health having improved in the past 12 months, they have been able to reunite and the lure of the Olympics helped them get back into action.

Now she finally has it. And so she can flaunt it.

Commenting on the same, Kerber said there is still a long way to go to match Serena’s level.

This was the first time since 2006 that two women have met in more than one of the year’s grand slam finals and who is to say there might not be more showdowns to come? “It was getting down to the pressure”.

Next on the shopping list is Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Slams.

Williams had been on the cusp of equalling Graf twice already in 2016 but slipped to defeat in the finals of the Australian and French Opens. “But it makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it and being here to receive my 22nd Grand Slam title is awesome”. Williams will have a shot at No. 23 later this year at the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam event on the calendar.

Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, sensed Williams was back to her best after they chatted on the phone following her loss to Garbine Muguruza at Roland Garros. “By losing, you realize things”.

In men’s doubles, Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert defeated Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-3 to win their first Wimbledon title. She slammed 13 aces.

“I think we did not realise how much time she needed to recover from the disappointment of the loss of the US Open, so it took time”.

The opening set was similarly well-matched, looking certain to go to a tie-break as neither player looked much like breaking the other’s serve, despite Serena earning a couple of break points.

There was more that Williams did well, though.

Williams hammered second serves that floated in at 75 miles per hour, breaking once in each set. After winning, Williams raised her arms and flashed two fingers on each hand, as a sign tht she was cognizant of her place in history. “Today, when she’s in trouble, 15-30: boom, boom”.

“I think sometime after the French Open, we were talking and strategising”. But on Saturday, Kerber didn’t win one. But she could not keep up with the trophy on the line, although it was a high-quality final that was tighter than the scoreline might indicate. In Melbourne I thought I played well but Angelique played great, and better. Then I was in the final again.

“But then I have to remind myself, ‘you are Serena Williams, you know like, are you kidding me?'”

“You want to eat more and eat more and eat more”.

Venus Williams, Serena’s older sister and doubles partner, was watching in her guest box. Inevitably, it was the newly-crowned seven-time singles champion who completed the job, swatting away a backhand volley into the open court to seal her second title of the afternoon.

Serena and Venus Williams reigned supreme at Wimbledon on Saturday.

Williams celebrated her title and thanked her family and friends for their support.

The American duo claimed their 14th major doubles championship – but their first since the SW19 success of 2012.

But even the ferociously competitive Williams seems happy to rest on her laurels, for a while at least. I think it took a lot of time.

After dropping that tiebreaker, Williams sat in her sideline chair and proceeded to smack her racket repeatedly against the grass, before flinging the equipment so far behind her that it landed in the lap of a TV cameraman. Williams said. “Who put that stipulation on it?” I missed the moment.
