Where Halep has no Grand Slam titles, Williams has 22 and a record number of singles win in major tournaments.

“She’s, like, the best player in the world. For that to be in a grand slam is pretty cool”, Williams said.

Karolina Pliskova, of the Czech Republic, returns a shot to Ana Konjuh, of Croatia, during the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016, in NY. “Now I don’t really see when I’m going to stop because I’m just enjoying these moments out here, getting to break records that I didn’t even know existed or I didn’t even know was possible”. Though no one really stood long enough to develop a lasting rivalry against her through her career that started at the beginning of 1998, her longevity and all-surface success remains unmatched as she chases the mark everyone’s rooting for her to go past: The 23rd Grand Slam title, which would take her past Steffi Graf on to the top spot in the Open era.

Wednesday was the final day for quarterfinal competition in both women’s and men’s play at the Open. “Just going for it and trying to stay a little bit relaxed when it’s close then just go for it when I have the chance”.

World number one, and title favourite Serena Williams has made history by defeating Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova, becoming the most successful player, male or female, in Grand Slam history.

The other women’s quarterfinal features two top-10 players: second-seeded Angelique Kerber, this year’s Australian Open champ, and No. 7 Roberta Vinci, last year’s U.S. Open runner-up.

That is the first set Williams has lost in five matches at Flushing Meadows this year.

The 29-year-old may have also become the new man to beat in NY, given top seed Novak Djokovic was partially hindered by an elbow injury in his victory over Kyle Edmund on Sunday and is also short on match play.

But Serena has looked formidable in surrendering just 20 games in four straight sets victories so far in Flushing Meadows.

Andy Murray was bothered by the chair umpire’s decision to call a let on a loud noise that came from the stadium’s speaker system and now finds himself headed to a fifth set against Kei Nishikori in the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Not only hasn’t she lost a set, but she hasn’t even been broken.

Karolina Pliskova dominated with her serve to roll past 18-year-old Ana Konjuh and into the U.S. Open semifinals. Pliskova, who leads the WTA in aces this season, got past seven-time major champion Venus Williams in a third-set tiebreaker, saving a match point along the way.

The 10th-seeded Pliskova won 6-2, 6-2 in just 57 minutes Wednesday, losing only one point on her serve in the first set.

The 92nd-ranked Konjuh hadn’t been past the third round at a major before this tournament. Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open title victor, earned the silver at the Olympics, while Wawrinka won a hard-court major trophy at the 2014 Australian Open. She’ll face No. 1 Serena Williams or fifth-seeded Simona Halep on Thursday.
