Williams wins Wimbledon to secure another Serena Slam

I can’t believe I’m standing here with another Serena Slam. In 1998 she became the only player in history to win a calendar “golden slam” winning all four grand slam events and the Seoul Olympic gold. “It’s super exciting”.

“I did the whole presentation, I did the whole walk around the court”, said Williams.

“Physically I have to make sure I feel good: right now I feel really good so I’m interested to see how I’ll feel going into the hard court season”.

Victory for Djokovicwould have an interesting symmetry – it was 30 years ago that coach Boris Becker won his first Wimbledon title as a 17-year-old. “I am happy it was such a great match”, Williams said.

Williams, whose maiden grand slam came nearly 16 years ago at the US Open, didn’t have it all her own way on her run to the final, doing it the hard way by knocking off three Wimbledon champions along the way in her sister Venus, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka. “It’s one of her characteristics”. Freshening up her workouts. “I will be ready for it”, Djokovic said.

“You know, that for me stands out the most”.

“Even after the French Open I didn’t think about winning a Serena Slam“. It’s her strength-which doesn’t look like it’s going away. I hadn’t won here in a while, I really wanted to win this title and that’s the same mind frame I want to go into the next Grand Slam.

I definitely felt a little pressure toward the end.

Despite the occasion, it was the Venezuelan-born Muguruza who began the sharper.

Not that anyone is really on her heels either.

On Saturday, on the grass of the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, Williams served to open, had three double faults and was broken.

Unfortunately no matter how many titles or how many records she sets Williams will never get the recognition she deserves.

“With Serena you have to do everything ideal”, Mancisidor told a pair of reporters. “You’ll be holding this trophy very, very soon”. “But for being in the first final at 21, nothing to (criticize)”.

He has an admirable record of consistency at the highest level having made at least the semifinals 19 times at the last 20 Grand Slams.

Despite the lack of respect Williams will not stop being great, she is already legendary.

Williams is continuing to dominate in her mid 30s and shows no signs of slowing down.

Williams swatted 21-year-old Muguruza aside with a 6-4 6-4 victory to claim her sixth Wimbledon title, serving poorly and unsettled – but ultimately still comfortable. The final slam of the year is at “home” with the US Open at Flushing Meadows next month. It took a few seconds before the realization sunk in – not only had she won her sixth Wimbledon title, but her bid for another “Serena Slam” was complete.

Serena Williams of the United States celebrates as she defeats… “You know, I think nowadays, more than anytime before, it’s really a team effort”. But there was delight for Dutchman Rojer – Andy Murray’s close friend – and particularly Tecau.

A late night treat followed, with 34-year-old Martina Hingis of Switzerland and India’s Sania Mirza capturing the women’s doubles title in an encounter that ended under the lights with the Center Court roof closed.

At 4-5 of the fight, Williams had had enough.

All of these tropes and sound bites were brought up before Serena took on Muguruza in the Wimbledon final on Saturday, and I heard them repeated during and afterward, as if I had been watching a different match than the rest of the world.
