Wilmots leaves Belgium after Euro 2016

The Red Devils were eliminated in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 earlier this month, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Wales.

Belgium entered the tournament as one of the favourites with the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois and a host of other top talent ready to take France by storm.

Wilmots also oversaw the side that were beaten by Argentina in the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup and his charges were second only to Argentina in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings going into the Euro.

Worldwide teams were still sorting out the disaster that was their Euro 2016 campaigns yesterday, as Belgium sacked Marc Wilmots and Ukraine hired Andriy Shevchenko.

“The KBVB’s technical commission made an evaluation of UEFA EURO 2016 and found that the intended goals were not reached”.

After four years at the helm, Marc Wilmots was sacked as Belgium manager on Friday.

“There is a common sense that the team needs a new impulse to lead this group towards a top result at a major tournament”.

The 47-year-old former Belgium worldwide held the position for four years and managed 50 games.

Heavily criticised by sections of the Belgian press – Wilmots had refused to take an immediate decision on whether he would continue as coach. “The idea is to start the upcoming games in September with a new coach”.

Ukraine, who failed to win a single game at the Euros, have appointed Andriy Shevchenko as their new head coach, following Mykhaylo Fomenko’s resignation.

Belgium sack coach Wilmots after Euros disappointment
