‘Wilshere can be Arsenal captain’ – Wenger confirms contract talks

Arsene Wenger believes that Jack Wilshere has the capacity to be a future Arsenal manager once his playing days are over.

His reply took in Wilshere’s ability and impatience, the competition for places at Arsenal and the situation that the player finds himself in after missing nearly all of last season because of a fractured fibula.

Wilshere has also been left out of new coach Sam Allardyce’s squad for the Three Lions and Wenger says he expects Wilshere to return stronger for Arsenal, claiming the possibility of the England worldwide stepping into his shoes as Arsenal coach.

“He’s gone to play games; he wanted games and I can understand his desire, it’s a logical decision”. I felt it was logical – let’s not forget past year he didn’t play.

The competition for midfield places in Arsenal these days is fierce, with Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Santiago Cazorla and Mesut Ozil competing for three midfield positions.

The Frenchman told reporters: “We had a chat and he himself was concerned he would not get enough competition. He is a world-class player, doesn’t have to show me his quality”.

“He’s ambitious and wants to win every single game so it is good that he has that ambition to be the best”, stated Wenger. In a selfish way, you want him to play for your club but there is a bigger perspective, you want him to play and express his talent.

Wilshere’s Arsenal contract expires at the end of the 2018 season. I think it looks logical to give him time to really come back to a competitive level. It is important for him that he gets games.

The Englishman made his Deadline Day switch to AFC Bournemouth on a season-long loan deal and his new boss has spoken about how the 24-year-old is getting on. “I don’t know. I think around December”.

Wilshere is expected to make his debut for Bournemouth at home to West Brom on Saturday.

I would not have personally thought about the midfielder as a manager, especially given his unprofessional antics off of the pitch, but there is still much time to mature before that time will come.
