David Beckham, who was in the Royal Box with his mother Sandra, applauded Murray and Peers as they were cheered off the court.

Prime Minister David Cameron had joked that spectators at Wimbledon would need their earplugs, with both players famous for their loud grunting on court. “I’d probably rather be us than him, I think”, Murray said.

Andy Murray’s older brother was competing with his partner John Peers against Jonathan Erlich and Philipp Petzschner when a wayward serve rebounded their tennis ball into the crowd. Perhaps there could be celebrity ball men and women next year..?

It was important for Murray and Peers to ignore that factor, especially once they fell a set behind.

“Sir Alex Ferguson was in the Royal Box today watching you”, Richardson began, “and he has been known to go into the dressing room after matches and give his players a bit of the hairdryer treatment”. Even though Jamie Murray and John Peers won the match, all started talking about is Beckham’s awesome catch.

Jamie has already claimed one Wimbledon title having won the mixed doubles with Jelena Jankovic in 2007.

His first appearance on Centre Court, he said: “It was seriously fantastic for me to play on it, a dream come true”.

“Most guys seem to fall out with each other and quit on it or try for something better”.

Asked after his crushing defeat to Federer if he would be in the stands to watch Jamie, Andy said: “I may come and be here and see what the score is”.

While Jamie has surely succeeded – win or lose – in his efforts to popularise doubles again, this sudden burst of attention has taken some getting used to.

“It’s a great result for us”, Murray said to the official Wimbledon website.

Jamie praised his brother, saying: “He’s been playing brilliant the last few months”.
