Wind Chill Watch issued for Luzerne County, NEPA, South Central New York

The Arctic blast will bring subzero cold to parts of the Midwest and reinforce the cold in the Southeast.

While the wind chills are expected to ease by late Sunday morning, the next patch of rough weather is expected Monday, with snow and sleet likely. Temperatures will stay in the double digits, but just barely.

A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect for the mountains until 10 a.m. today with wind chills as low as -10° at times, especially at elevations above 3500 ft.

After the bitter cold morning, snow is expected to spread into the state Saturday night. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. As the winds continue and the temperature continues to drop, wind chill values will be between 10 and 20 degrees below zero on Saturday night.

Winds will gradually diminish Sunday, as high pressure builds overhead.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, high near 23. After starting off with lower 30s Monday and Tuesday comes 40s starting on Thursday.

“Once precipitation changes over to rain, the ground is likely to remain at or below freezing for a time due to the recent cold from Valentine’s Day weekend”, AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Rathbun said.

With those wind chills, frostbite can happen in less than 30 minutes.

A few light snow showers will be possible this afternoon as a clipper system moves over the Great Lakes.

The bone-chilling cold also canceled horse racing at New York’s Aqueduct Racetrack as well as the Central Park Ice Festival, which was to feature ice-carving artists and music. Increasing clouds, with a high near 26. Wind chills: -10 to -20. Wind chill values as low as -25. More sunshine works in for Sunday. By Friday, the frigid temperatures will spread through the Midwest, and highs will struggle to get above zero in eastern North Dakota, northern Wisconsin, northern Minnesota, and MI.

Up to 37 inches of snow fell in Mexico, New York, in the last two days. Windy, with a northwest wind 21 to 26 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 44 miles per hour.
