Microsoft has said that it will start charging for Windows 10 upgrade beginning July 29.
29 July 2016 is the last day users running OSes newer than Windows 7 will be able to step up to Windows 10 for free. When it announced changes like Windows-as-a-Service and the Universal Windows Platform in January 2015, the company also announced it would be offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade for one year following its July 2015 launch.
Microsoft said on Thursday that Windows 10 is now running on 300 million active devices around the world, an increase of 30 million over the 270 million devices figure Microsoft provided in March during at its annual Build developer conference.
The 300 million represents new computers and devices with Windows 10 installed, as well as upgrades of existing gadgets.
There’s still plenty of time to upgrade at no cost, if that’s what you want to do, but once the deadline comes and goes, you’ll either have to purchase a license or buy a new PC with Windows 10 pre-installed.
In the post, Mehdi also noted several pieces of information that showed how users are adopting Windows 10 faster, as well as using it more. The Windows 10 OS can run on laptops, notebooks, desktops, smartphones, tablets and Xbox One consoles, among others. Cortana has answered over 6 billion questions. However, with the Steam survey showing Windows 10 has surpassed Windows 7, 38 percent to 32.5 percent, it’s not surprising that Windows 10 has gained traction with gamers.
“Windows 10 Enterprise is our offering that provides IT pros with the most granular control over company devices”, the tech giant said in a statement.
