Windows 10 Mobile gets an end-of-life date, surrounded by mystery

The total share of Mac OS X, Apple’s desktop operating system, sits at 7% – roughly 158 million devices – meaning that Windows 10 has outgrown it. Next up, according to the data, is Windows XP. The “Internet of Things” version of the OS was first launched for maker and hobbyist product creators earlier this year.

It allows users to run a fully functional Windows 10 Mobile build on their device, but there’s a catch: the ROM is only available for the LTE-enabled variant of the device, which means that the Xiaomi Mi 4W which is widely used in many countries, including India, is not supported.

It is indeed a big step for both Android and Windows Phone users and developers as the availability of this ROM opens a good opportunity and possibilities ahead. The mobile version of the operating system is struggling, however, capturing just 2.5% of the worldwide smartphone marketshare.

Windows 10 adoption also has been slowed by sluggish sales of new PCs, which come with the new operating system installed.

In November, 56.1% of PCs on the Internet were running Windows 7, Net Applications reported Tuesday. Since September, Windows 8.1’s share on DAP has actually climbed, from 15.6% in September to 15.8% thus far in November.

US proves to be a stronghold for Windows 10
