Windows Phone market share falls below one percent

After months of just “recommending” Windows 10 to Windows 7/8.1 users, Microsoft is making one last ditch deceptive attempt to fool these users to download its latest operating system before the free offer expires on July 29th.

The research firm estimates that almost 2.4 million Windows Phones were sold during January-March period, around 0.7% market share overall.

By the end of 2015, Microsoft’s Windows Phones only managed to claim 1.1% market share, while Blackberry trailed behind with a very insignificant 0.2% market share.

“Nokia’s announced return to the smartphone and tablet markets will not be an easy mission”. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2016, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

It appears Microsoft is only interested in boosting the number of Windows 10 installs to make its number look better, without regard to the end user. Internet Explorer 11 is still sticking around, but it’s more vestigial now and only there to support legacy applications as required by certain enterprise users.

“Smartphone sales were driven by demand for low-priced smartphones in emerging markets and for affordable 4G smartphones, led by 4G connectivity promotion plans from communications service providers in many markets worldwide”, the company said. According to rumors, Microsoft may launch a Surface-branded phone in 2017. Microsoft hast just updated it guidelines for which hardware specs will be allowed to run which Windows 10 version.
