LAS VEGAS – Hillary Clinton made a surprise stop the night before the first Democratic debate, rallying with union workers outside the Trump Hotel on the strip. “That means saying no to Donald Trump”, Clinton said, the Las Vegas Sun reported. Indeed, Clinton has increasingly moved to the left on domestic policy since announcing her campaign this spring, including voicing opposition to the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canadian oil fields to Gulf Coast refineries and support for expansive gun control legislation. But Sanders has pulled close to her in polls in Iowa, whose caucuses lead off the state-by-state nominating contests next year, and leads in New Hampshire, which holds the first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley appeared at a similar rally in August, and has been in regular contact with the union ever since, according to his campaign.
Many pundits see this as a chance for the lesser profile names to let people know what they’re about. He doesn’t look like the polished politician we’ve become used to seeing in the race for president. He has mounted a push for the party to expand the number, even encouraging protests in front of Democratic Party headquarters. Will his absence prove to be “addition by subtraction”? “I do think that people take that more seriously”. This fight has just begun.
Sanders also told his aids that they shouldn’t bother to create any sort of mock debate scenario for him, reported Politico. “The hope would be that the Democratic debate engages the participation and attention that the Republican debate was able to do”. Will any candidates feel pressured to match Trump’s bravado? Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and former Senator and Navy Secretary James Webb of Virginia.
He was consistently opposed to the Iraq War, but he also has more conservative views.
