Winners, losers at 2016 Golden Globes

Or vice versa? Did you prefer Tina and Amy as hosts?

The Golden Globes packed a lot in over the course of three hours – big wins for The Revenant, The Martian, and Mozart in the Jungle; an nearly rumble between host Ricky Gervais and Mel Gibson; a standing ovation for Sylvester Stallone; Taraji P. Henson passing out cookies; a whole lot of cursing.

Among his controversial and often offensive jokes, Ricky Gervais also wasn’t afraid to let the F-word slip.

Awards aside, all eyes will be on Gervais, who raised eyebrows for his off-color jokes when he hosted the show for three years starting in 2010.

The opening monologue had some genuinely amusing moments.

“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had”, Stallone said. “Yes, that is the level [of the jokes]”, Gervais added, “An old man pulling me off”. Thank you for teaching me so much. Gervais came back out from backstage, the two pretended to be friendly (even though you could cut the tension with a knife) and Gervais said he wanted to ask Gibson a question.

Shame that he missed the entire point of Jennifer Lawrence’s fight for equality by stating, “Jennifer Lawrence made the news when she demanded equal pay for women in Hollywood and she received overwhelming support from people everywhere”.

And another: the reputation of the HFPA as journalists whose vote can be swayed with gifts.

“Our next presenter is the star of the hilarious comedy The Martian“, Gervais said with a dramatic laugh, pointing out the absurdity of The Martian being nominated in the Golden Globes’s comedy categories.

“#TheGrinder on the road!” the man who made his name in the Brat Pack wrote.

“We can all use our influence to shine a spotlight on violence, injustice and intolerance”, Soria said, as the television cameras cut somewhat predictably to actor and activist Brad Pitt, “[and] in doing so we can make our world a more hopeful, and a better, place”.

Tom Hanks announces Denzel Washington as the recipient of the 2016 Cecil B. DeMille Award.

The absence of “The Force Awakens” – a certain ratings booster for any awards show – will surely be one of the things Gervais needles the Hollywood Foreign Press Association about at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ceremony, which runs from 8-11 p.m. EST, telecast live on NBC.

The unsung heroes of the Golden Globes are the behind-the-scenes producers, camera operators and technical types. Though Inarritu had a similar run at the Academy Awards last year with the best-picture winning “Birdman”, he won only a share of best screenplay at last year’s Globes.
