Winrock Center debuts “Independence Day” sequel with double feature

But it is nothing we have not seen before in Independence Day or any of the other films it spawned that thrived on scenes of global destruction (The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, San Andreas). While the pair bring star power to the table, their interactions with each other fail to compare the raw charisma Smith brought to “Independence Day”.

“Independence Day” grossed over US$817.4 million worldwide in 1996, becoming that year’s highest-grossing film and the second highest-grossing film of all time at that point. “When he learned that I had an offer to act in the film, he was more thrilled than me”, she said, also adding that her husband will invite family, friends and fans to an exclusive screening of the film. A sequel, especially one without Smith, who is seen in pictures and portraits and occasionally talked about, is a mere cash grab. Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe), President Whitmore’s daughter, served as a pilot as well and now serves in the presidential administration of President Lanford (Sela Ward). But the old Prez is haunted by dreams of another alien invasion. According to Empire, the director behind Independence Day has pitched an “intergalactic journey” for a possible Independence Day 3 film. Somehow his presence and line delivery make even the most terrible films (and unfortunately he has a few.) bearable. Hollywood has started making a different kind of summer blockbuster now, not necessarily better, but more self-aware and cynical. The actor then starred in “After Earth”, a sci-fi film with a father-son theme which did not have a good performance in the box office. When the alien invaders attack with unprecedented force, the USA president, teams of scientists and courageous fighter pilots spring into action to save the planet from a seemingly invincible enemy.

Emmerich’s trip back into the world of Independence Day has not been well-received by film’s top critics.
