Winter storm advisory issued for eastern Nebraska

A winter storm is expected to dump up to 10 inches of snow in eastern South Dakota, with two to four inches in the Pierre and Fort Pierre areas in central South Dakota and southern North Dakota.

In its place, the weather service issued a winter weather advisory in its place until 6 p.m. Monday.

The US weather provided little to be grateful for this Thanksgiving, with rain, snow and freezing rain affecting many parts of the country. And high temperatures are expected to top out at 33 degrees, Weather Service meteorologists predict.

Ice storms and freezing rain brought down trees and power lines.

Numerous accidents were reported around the Omaha area Monday during the morning commute as wet conditions began changing to sleet and some roads started turning slick.

Search crews in Texas found a body Monday in the submerged auto of a woman who was swept off a bridge by floodwaters three days earlier near Fort Worth.

Precipitation is still possible throughout the day in Lincoln, although with temperatures hovering at the freezing mark, snow accumulation will turn into a slushy mix, forecasters said.

As of Sunday evening the Weather Service was forecasting a general 3- to 6-inch snowfall across the region, with locally higher amounts possible; the best chances for the heaviest snow will be along and south of U.S. Highway 2.

California and the West Coast are expected to see more storms than usual, though relief about receiving the much-needed precipitation is tempered with worries about mudslides.

Bella’s “relative lack of moisture and quick-moving nature … should mitigate this from becoming a crippling storm for many”, Weather.com explained, but added, “slow down, leave extra time if you must travel, or consider postponing your trip”.
