We would need at least one inch or more of new snow on Christmas day for it to be considered a White Christmas, and it’s just not in the cards this year.
Later in the night, rain is set become persistent and heavy over the west of the country and quickly spread eastwards by morning in a strong and gusty southerly wind.
Saturday night, Christmas Eve, there will be a chance of drizzle after midnight, according to the weather service.
Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said: “There will be blustery westerly winds coming through with heavy frequent wintry showers and we could see accumulations of snow on higher ground and maybe some slushy stuff at lower levels”.
The team is calling for 5-8 inches of snow at lower elevations, with 8-12 inches falling in the mountain passes through Christmas Day.
Parts of the Northwest United States are set to receive a fresh coating of snow early this week that will likely stick around until the holiday.
James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, warned winds could touch 100mph in exposed parts of the north on Friday.
Christmas Eve: Partly cloudy, with a low around 29.
“It is looking very promising for people who have placed a bet on a White Christmas for some northern and western locations”.
The Government has readied 1,200 soldiers for flood duties during the winter storm season as it tries to avoid criticism from earlier years that it has been unprepared for catastrophic flooding.
“There is the potential that these gusts could cause structural damage and bring down power cables, so we may find interruption to electricity supplies”.

Kaiser said the system has already “slowed down a little bit” as snow was in the forecast for Saturday but now it looks like that evening “will remain dry”.
