Winter Storm Warning in effect for Rice County through Thursday
A plow clears streets in Traverse City, Mich, on Thursday, March 24, 2016, as a winter storm dumps snow and ice on the region. The weather service says roads in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula were snow-covered but passable Thursday morning. Today’s high could reach 35 degrees, dropping to 28 tonight with a possible mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow and rain.

Snow, ice and wind from an early spring storm knocked out power to hundreds of homes in some western MI communities.
Mason County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Steve Hansen says that, “in some places, the roads are only one lane and majority are icy and slushy”.

Why? There are thousands of miles between where the storm-creating weather system is now and when it hits our region – if it does. Travelers trying to fly out Thursday faced long lines during the already busy spring break travel week. The storm will also result in considerable blowing and drifting snow.
