The Midwest’s first snowstorm of the season moved across the region Friday and Saturday, causing whiteout conditions and treacherous travel.

The storm affected air travel, with 457 USA flights canceled by Saturday morning, with Chicago’s O’Hare worldwide and Midway global airports the hardest hit. The National Weather Service says heavy snowfall was expected Friday afternoon into early Saturday in parts of northwest and north central Iowa.

The first big snow of the season in the Midwest meant many were stranded, including Dorchester native Donnie Heidelberg. A few flights have been delayed for about an hour or diverted to other cities.

Similarly, Milwaukee hasn’t seen a 6-inch-plus November snow total in 20 years.

More than 60 accidents have been reported on the roads around Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as Winter Storm Bella makes its way through the area.

Residents can expect moderate to heavy snow, with accumulations of 6 to 8 inches.

Parts of eastern Iowa and northern IL, including the cities Madison, Rockford, Milwaukee and Chicago, are under winter storm warnings.

Snow will spread from the northern Rockies, northern High Plains and Missouri Valley during the day, into the Mississippi Valley and western Great Lakes (southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois) Friday night. The Indiana Toll Road in the northern part of the state is banning triple-trailer trucks from 7 a.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday because of risky conditions. Grand Rapids had about 3 inches.

WINTER STORM WARNING in effect for Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, and Sanilac counties until 10 PM.
