Wireless charging reportedly coming to next year’s iPhone

If the release actually happens in March, Apple will most likely be working on software updates that will work with these new hardware offerings.

Apple is now working with partners in the United States and Asia to develop wireless charging for iPhone and iPad, according to a new report from Bloomberg. As per the publication, the device would be losing the 3.5 mm headphone port, so that Apple would be able to further reduce its thickness. “The iPhone maker is looking to overcome technical barriers including loss of power over distance with a decision on implementing the technology still being assessed…”

Back in 2010, Apple applied for a patent for a concept of using an iMac as a wireless charging hub for smaller devices.

Unfortunately for those who have dreams of charging their devices truly wirelessly, the current generation of cordless charging technology involves wires and an inductive charging mat. One is that multiple incompatible standards mean a particular charging mat won’t necessarily work with your device.

2016 would be a good year for Apple to begin its charge into the world of original programming.

Until then, the best way to wireless charge an iPhone is probably to slap the phone in a wireless charging case. This rumor also claims that the service will be announced alongside the iPhone 7 in September.

Bloomberg also said that Trudy Muller, a spokeswoman for Apple, declined to comment when contacted. Imagine being able to charge an iPhone from across the room while it’s being held rather than having to plug it in or rest it on a charging plate. That poses a challenge because efficiency decreases with distance, so it takes longer to charge a battery.
