Wireless charging rivals merge to become AirFuel Alliance

The scattered wireless charging scene just became a little less messy, with two of the three major standards uniting as one. The new consortium is focused on establishing a single, core, wireless charging standard to support a wide range of consumer, industrial, medical and military applications. This is not going to be an easy battle for the newly formed wireless charging company, as Wireless Power Consortium is a champion in Qi charging standard, which is now used in many existing wireless chargers.

When it comes to wireless charging, the big issue here is that there does not appear to be a clear industry standard as of yet. “We embrace a new, inclusive ideal of wireless charging and those member companies within AirFuel Alliance are energised towards bringing wireless power products to consumers globally”. Now that it’s been finalized, the AirFuel name and logo will take over for future products, while brands associated with the former A4WP and PMA identities go into retirement following a “suitable grace period”. This makes it easier to build wireless charging into desks, tables, or other furniture since you can even charge your gadgets through a small piece of wood. This is because AirFuel Alliance is actually the combination of both PMA and A4WP.

“AirFuel Alliance aims to unify the global consumer, always on the move with technology that shapes itself around mobility and convenience”, said Mani Parmar, VP Business Development, Duracell Powermat. The alliance is also developing technologies that go beyond the use of magnetics via the uncoupled working group. Thanks to a recent industry shakeup, there are now only two different types of wireless charging for everyone to ignore.
