Wisler falters in 6th as Rockies beat Braves, 8-4

Rockies rookie Trevor Story blasted a two-run homer off Atlanta right-hander Matt Wisler in the second inning Saturday night to break the National League record for home runs by a rookie shortstop. Now he’s looking down at his mentor after another big night at the plate. Barring injury, Story should coast to the overall record for rookie shortstops (30) set by former Boston Red Sox great Nomar Garciaparra in 1997.

Wisler allowed just two hits and one mistake through five, but the Colorado Rockies roughed him up in the sixth on their way to an 8-4 win over the Braves.

Wisler (4-10) was sharp following a 47-minute rain delay after the second inning, allowing a harmless single to Story in the fourth before the Rockies jumped on him in the sixth. Wisler (4-10) retired the first batter in the inning, but DJ LeMahieu walked and Arenado grounded a single to left. “When we saw him previous year in Albuquerque, we thought, ‘This guy’s a stud”‘. De La Cruz was replaced by left-hander Dario Alvarez, who promptly gave up a single to Carlos Gonzalez before Trevor Story’s two-run homer pushed the lead to 4-3.

A strong weather cell moved through the area and brought the tarp out after the second inning.

The Atlanta Braves wrap up their four-game series against the host Colorado Rockies on Sunday and will be more than happy to board a plane and fly to Minnesota for their next set. Story followed a leadoff walk to Gonzalez with a two-run homer in the second that put the Rockies ahead 2-1.

The Braves scored in the first inning when Freddie Freeman hit a triple that was dropped by left fielder Ryan Raburn after a hard catch attempt on the warning track.

“That kid’s the real deal”, Snitker said. Snitker said Teheran could be available for his next scheduled start. “I’m optimistic, but if he can’t, with this off day on Monday, we might be able to get an extra day, too”. Rockies RHP Chad Qualls (colitis), who is 2-0 with a 5.61 ERA in 36 games, was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 16. Tyrell Jenkins gets the ball, and he’s 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA and nine strikeouts this season. He became the first rookie to do so since Bo Jackson and joined Larry Walker, Vinny Castilla and Dante Bichette as the only players in Rockies history to have such a night. He passed Todd Helton, who had 25 in 1998, and is two behind Wilin Rosario’s 28, reached in 2012.

The Colorado Rockies look for another win after winning six of their last nine games. The Braves cut the lead to 7-4 on first baseman Mark Reynolds’ error in the eighth. He drove in Colorado’s first two runs when he belted his 25th home run of the season in the second, following a walk to Nolan Arenado. Tyler Chatwood takes the hill, and he’s 8-6 with a 3.83 ERA and 60 strikeouts this season.
