With Shiffrin out, Vlhova grabs 1st career win in slalom

Lindsey Vonn whoops it up after winning a World Cup giant slalom at…
The United States Ski Team doesn’t release comments on injuries until the full extent of each case is known.
“I fell during free skiing on the race hill and I’m waiting for an MRI this afternoon to see what’s going on”, Shiffrin confirmed in a Facebook post.
Her American teammate, Mikaela Shiffrin, crashed during a warmup run and was forced to bow out of the race.
The 20-year-old Shiffrin won gold in the slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games in Russian Federation and the American also took out the slalom at the past two world championships.
The 20-year-old Vlhova, a youth Olympic and junior world champion in the discipline, timed a combined 1min 44.26sec over the two legs under floodlights in freezing conditions down the Swedish resort’s Olympia course. “So I really hope that they’re both OK, and we need them back at the start tomorrow”, she told the official FIS website.
Runs were shortened because of strong wind, but Vonn found familiarity in a nighttime performance. Visibility was also a factor, with the artificial lights turned on to aid skiers.
The Olympic slalom champion was unable to compete in Sweden and was taken to hospital for a scan.
Slovakian Vlhova failed to read the script, though, and was able to savour what was her finest hour by ensuring Hansdotter had to settle for a second-placed finish, which moved her above Shiffrin in the slalom standings.
Mikaela Shiffrin sustained a possible right knee injury warming up prior to the race.
With Tina Maze taking this season off and defending overall victor Anna Fenninger out injured for the year, Shiffrin and Vonn are the top two overall contenders.

Shiffrin has done well in Are previously. She also missed the first opportunity of the season for a win in giant slalom at the race held in Sheldon, Austria in October, due to a broken left ankle.
