Wladimir Klitschko to take stock after defeat to Tyson Fury

Fury was awarded the fight in Duesseldorf 115-112, 115-112 and 116-111 by the judges on Saturday as Klitschko’s reign as world champion was ended after nine years, six months.

A mandatory challenger to the 39-year-old Klitschko, the 27-year-old Brit left the German fans in utter disbelief after the decision was announced.

He also sang Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” in the ring after victory in Düsseldorf and made homophobic remarks in a newspaper interview in the build-up to the fight, but former heavyweight champion Lewis has warned Fury he is now a role model.

Fury, a 4/1 underdog, was backed by his team including family and Bolton-based agent Asif Vali.

“I never believed he would do it, but he did”, said Kitschko.

Fury, an undefeated British boxer, was taking on the man who had been heavyweight champion of the world since 2006 – and who hadn’t lost since 2004.

The fact that it was an insipid encounter from a technical standpoint will soon be forgotten, as this was a superb gameplan from the Fury camp executed to near-perfection and a truly historic moment as the Klitschko dominance finally came to an end.

“I know how good Wladimir is and Wladimir did not show how good he is [against Fury]”, said Vitali.

The match was parked unto life in Round 9, when Klitschko became more desperate after his corner told him that he needed a knockout and as Fury got visibly exhausted but Klitschko could still not land the telling punch.

The second was just as cagey but Fury, feinting constantly, landed a couple of half-decent left hooks which arguably won him the round.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live after the fight, Fury said: “I always said what I’d do and I’ve delivered tonight”.

Fury is already focusing on the rematch to the extent he rubbished talk of a unification fight with the American WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

Kell Brook, the IBF welterweight champion, tweeted: “Just heard, WOW congratulations to @Tyson_Fury I had kilt to win I hold my hands up! well done unbelievable for British boxing!”.

The fight was originally set for October and had to be called off when Klitschko suffered a calf injury. Although the fight was meant to take place on 24 October 2015, Klitschko sustained a calf injury and therefore the fight was put back to 28 November 2015.

Would Fury defeat David Haye? I was playing games in there, taunting him.
