Burnley’s James Anderson moved up to sixth on the list of all-time Test wicket-takers as he dismantled Sri Lanka at Headingley.

James Anderson believes England have started to lay the bad memories of 2014’s Test series defeat against Sri Lanka to rest after a comprehensive victory over the same opponents by an innings and 88 runs at Headingley. Lancashire paceman Anderson took five for 29 which, added to his five for 16 in Sri Lanka’s meagre first innings 91, gave him match figures of 10 for 45.

Finn picked up two wickets in an over, while Anderson took the final wicket of Nuwan Pradeep to wrap up the game.

“I thought we batted poorly right throughout”, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said.

“I’ll bat wherever”, said Bairstow.

Perera was cleared to play again two weeks ago after the International Cricket Council lifted a provisional doping ban and all associated charges against him following concerns over the reliability of the drug test carried out by a World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory in Qatar.

Ben Stokes will not bowl on the third day of the Leeds Test after suffering a knee injury.

“We try not to but you can take performances like that for granted, certainly against a young Sri Lanka side but I honestly don’t think it would have mattered who was batting against that level of bowling from Jimmy”.

His second ball saw Mendis get a thin glance, with Bairstow failing to hold the hard legside chance.

Spinner Moeen Ali forced Dinesh Chandimal, on eight, to chop the ball on to his stumps.

Herath was smartly caught by Stokes in the slips off Anderson for one, Chameera (2) drove Broad to Finn at mid-off and Lahiru Thirimanne, on 22, was caught by Finn at mid-on off Broad.

It was truly an unforgettable match and occasion for Bairstow as it came on his home Headingley ground, in front of his mother Janet, a stalwart of cricket for many years and cricket administrator for Yorkshire CCC.
