‘The Mr. Skeptic in me originally may have dissuaded her at first since a lot of pearls people find aren’t really anything most of the time, ‘ Irwin told ABC News.
Hasz took her discovery to a local gemologist, who was a bit skeptical at the find.
“It was pretty dark in the restaurant, so it was hard to tell what it was, but when I looked at it closer, it looked totally round and flawless”, Hasz told ABC News, “Too ideal”.
A Washington state woman dining out with her husband said she almost broke a tooth on a hard object that turned out to be a $600 pearl.
As she took it out of her mouth, the tiny pebble looked like a pellet, but Hasz thought, based on what she was eating, there was a chance it could be a pearl, but she wasn’t so sure.
Ted Irwin, president of the Northwest Geological Laboratory and director of the Northwest Geological Institute, informed Hasz the Quahog is worth roughly $600.
As for Hasz, she said she plans on turning her pearl into a necklace and keeping it as a good luck charm.
Gem experts say finding a pearl of this quality is so rare that you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than actually finding a good quality pearl.
Montalcino owner Cindy Nardone says she’s happy for Hasz. The owners told ABC customers are coming in and ordering the frutti di mare with hopes of finding another exotic gem.
