Mari Gilbert, the mother of Shannan Gilbert – whose body was found near Gilgo Beach in 2010 and led to the discovery of 10 other sets of human remains – was found dead in her Ellenville apartment Saturday and her other daughter has been charged, police said Sunday. Mari Gilbert was found dead Saturday in an apartment, and her younger daughter, Sarra, was charged with murder, police said. Her daughter, Sarra, (right) has been charged with murder. They said she was killed in the morning.
Police also did not say how the homicide was committed, but the charge against Sarra Gilbert suggests a weapon might have been involved.
She is being held without bail. A preliminary hearing in her case has been scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Shannan vanished in May 2010 after she left the home of client in Oak Beach in Long Island, near the stretch of beach where the bodies were found.
Shannan Gilbert, a Craigslist escort from Jersey City, is believed to be the last known victim of at least 11 people slain by a yet-to-be-apprehended Long Island serial killer.
No suspects have been arrested, or identified, in any of the Long Island killings, but investigators believe a serial killer – perhaps more than one – was responsible. A Suffolk County medical examiner’s autopsy found in February of this year that her death was “consistent with homicidal strangulation”, but could not determine a cause. “I was very angry as any parent should be, but as time went by I kind of realized that maybe that was her destiny to help other families”, Gilbert said then.
