Police spokesman Hans-Peter Kruesi said they had found no evidence that the man, from a neighbouring region of Switzerland, had ties to extremist groups.
Dozens of passengers were on the train when the attack occurred on the route between Buchs and Sennwald, just before the Salez Station, authorities said.
Swiss police confirmed that the man, 27 and the woman, 34 succumbed to their injuries after the incident in a train carriage in the eastern canton of Saint Gallen yesterday.
Police say the attack took place at around 12:20 (GMT) near the Salez station.
The attacker has also died, they added. The attacker was shot and killed by police.
Three other people are still in a critical condition in hospital.
A 27-year-old Swiss man attacked several passengers on a train in canton St Gallen on Saturday afternoon.
The attacker’s motives are unclear at this time, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Two girls, aged 6 and 17 years old respectively, were in serious condition.
A local police spokesperson also told the press that the injured passengers, with both stab and burn wounds, had been taken to hospital.
The Swiss train attack again illustrates how hard it is for authorities to protect the continent’s labyrinthine transport system, particularly against individuals wielding unsophisticated weapons.
