Woman who alleges Jian Ghomeshi sexually assaulted her to face cross examination

It’s been almost two years since Ghomeshi was formally charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance by choking.

Henein questioned why the woman insisted Ghomeshi had been driving a Volkswagen Beetle, or a “Disney auto”, when, she argued, the former CBC radio host owned a GTI vehicle at the time.

He is facing four counts of sexual assault and one count of choking, all of which he has pleaded not guilty to.

In a long message on Facebook, Jian Ghomeshi had admitted having had sex “brutal”, but claimed that these relationships were always consensual.

While the other two women’s identities are now protected by a publication ban, one of the complainants, actress Lucy Decoutere, known for her role as Lucy in Trailer Park Boys, has appeared in court to waive this right. She said that they kissed then he pulled her hair again but he suddenly yanked her to her knees then puncher her on the side of the head.

As to whether he pushed her or threw her to the floor, she added: “It wasn’t like he was saying ‘here, have a seat'”.

“It felt nearly like a rage that wasn’t there the second before he did it”, said the woman.

Victims’ advocates will be scrutinizing treatment of Ghomeshi’s accusers, especially by the prominent defense lawyer Marie Henein who is leading Ghomeshi’s team.

DeCoutere was the first woman to speak on the record about her allegations against Ghomeshi.

Ghomeshi, who previously hosted the CBC Radio national arts magazine show, “Q”, was terminated by CBC in October 2014 following a barrage of sexual assault complaints which dated back from 2010.

Ghomeshi listened quietly to the proceedings, at times fiddling with his hands, but showing little emotion.

It is being heard without a jury by Judge William Horkins. He is being tried by judge alone. In his memoir, Bryant later said his lawyer seemed to “channel Hannibal Lecter” for her ability to “find a person’s deepest frailties and exploit them”.

She said went to the police more than a decade later, after police encouraged women to come forward.

She also said she had been nervous when she spoke to two detectives in November 2014. “But I wasn’t shocked by how many”.

Now, she said, she knows she wasn’t wearing extensions and that this “was an error on my part”. A few months ago, one of the lawyers representing a plaintiff openly lamented that sexual assault charges are hard to prove and that only six out of every 1000 cases result in a conviction.
