Women can spread Zika Virus, CDC says

Because mosquitoes do not travel far, the transmission from mosquito to a human will likely take place after mosquitoes have bitten a person already infected with the Zika virus.

Spain has recorded the first case in Europe of a baby born with the microcephaly birth defect associated with the Zika virus, Spanish health authorities said on Monday.

No mosquitoes are confirmed to have spread Zika on the USA mainland, but two cases reported last week in Florida may change that.

All U.S. illnesses have been connected to travel to areas with Zika outbreaks.

For that reason, experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the new guidelines “include the possibility of sexual transmission from an infected woman”.

There are at least 400 pregnant women infected with Zika in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and another 378 pregnant women in the USA territories, majority in Puerto Rico. But Colombian health officials say the number of new infections in their country is falling by more than 600 a week, meaning that the virus has moved into an “endemic” phase in which it continues to circulate but is no longer spreading pervasively.

The registry collects information about pregnancy and infant outcomes following laboratory evidence of Zika virus infection during pregnancy.

“CDC recommends that all pregnant women with sex partners (male or female), who live in or traveled to an area with Zika, use condoms during sex or abstain from sex for the remainder of their pregnancy”, the agency said.

Many people infected with Zika virus won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms.

Officials in Colombia said they were also ending their recommendation that couples delay pregnancies.

Colombia has been closely watched because it has had the most Zika infections of any country besides Brazil, considered the epicenter of the outbreak.
