Having dominated the Olympic qualifiers, it’s no surprise the USA gymnastics team just won gold in the all-around finals.

She bounced into splits and pulled herself up, James Brown style. I tried to redirect my niece’s energy.

The mothers of three of the gymnasts told ABC News’ Good Morning America they are just as nervous as their daughters, Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and the youngest team member, 16-year-old Laurie Hernandez.

“They were not only physically prepared, but mentally prepared, and that’s a nice place to be because you don’t have to snap anybody into place”, US Olympic coach Aimee Boorman said, according to the USA Gymnastics website. The U.S. opened its bid to become only the second non-Soviet Union team to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Sunday’s qualifying round with one of the most dominant performances in the sport’s history. She easily passed that, leading the team to a 184.897-to-176.688 victory over the Russians. We have the ability to shape cultures, impact societies and excel against all institutional odds. All the team and all the team moms, and just everybody that competes out there because it’s not just about our girls.

She takes seeing black excellence for granted, and a part of me hopes that she always does – that she’ll never know the ugly parts of the US like I do. “And she said, ‘This is why we do so many repetitions in practice'”.
