History was made as Australia claimed gold in the inaugural women’s Olympic sevens tournament at Rio de Janeiro.

“The future of women’s rugby in Australia is very bright”, Parry added.

“My initial reaction was hurt for the girls, when they fall short through no lack of trying, no lack of character and no lack of actual rugby ability you sympathise with them”, Horan told ONE News after the loss.

They may wear pigtails and ribbons in their hair, but don’t question the mongrel of Australia’s glamour women’s rugby sevens side.

“Fingers crossed come 2020 (Olympics) it will be there for Tokyo as well”.

Elia Green, who is considered the fastest woman in rugby, scored a try for Australia early in the second half with Woodman still sidelined.

“To have it here and being played is huge”, said McCaw, reflecting on the significance of rugby sevens returning to the Olympics.

The moment Emma Tonegato dropped the ball while grounding it in the women’s sevens final.

Head coach Simon Middleton denied that his team had suffered a hangover in their bronze medal match, insisting the players had “regrouped” from the 25-7 loss and were ready for business. The Canadians were second in the World Series in 2014-15. “We’ve said it all along we’re strong enough to be with the best crews in the world”. “We made errors when it counted and that’s down to me”.

Australia were up 12-5 at the time, but were able to seal the match soon after thanks to a ruck turnover deep in defence which sparked a breakout try to Ellia Green.

The try was awarded to allow Australia to draw level in the corner and get themselves into the contest as a fired up New Zealand had a player sent to the sin bin on the verge of half-time for a deliberate knockdown.

New Zealand captain Sarah Goss said she was “pretty gutted” with the result.

“That’s a performance we can be proud of”, said Ghislaine Landry, who scored a team high 18 points in their bronze-medal win”.

“I don’t know what happened”. “I knew it was going to come down to the touch and just trying to get my hand on the wall first”. He said his players came out against Britain “a little bit pissed off with the way they played (against) Australia”.

“We started pulling apart from each other and in a boat and a crew like this we’ve really got to be one unit”. “I had no idea I would react like that, but it just shows how much passion we have for this game and for each other. I’m really proud of the girls”.

Rugby is back in the Olympics for the first time since 1924, but in the condensed sevens format and with men’s and women’s competitions.

On that long-ago afternoon in Paris, the United States men’s 15-a-side team beat France to win gold and retain their Olympic title, with Romania taking bronze.

“I feel like a superhero”.
