With the road to Rio getting even shorter, the Olympic torch made an appearance at the Sao Paulo 7s, as numerous qualified teams for Rio used the competition to hone their skills and patterns ahead of the biggest stage of them all in August.
The Canadian women were beaten 29-0 in heavy rain in Sunday’s final as Australia won its second straight Cup final this season.
Australia was the first to strike on the scoreboard with Evania Pelite breaking through the Canadian line from within Australia’s half to score underneath the posts creating a 7-0 lead. Alicia Quirk followed her to make it 14-0 at the break.
The loss reversed the result from the Dubai tournament earlier this month, when the New Zealanders edged Canada 24-19 in the plate final.
“Ellia Green added that dimension of power, pace and unpredictability and she was again another asset to us today”.
The Aussies thrashed Canada 29-0 in the final in Sao Paulo, Brazil and are undefeated after the first two legs of the world series, having also triumphed in Dubai last December. It noted the Australian sevens had opened up a huge lead with three tournaments to go despite missing some injured stars.
The runners-up in São Paulo, Canada, strengthened their claim as potential Olympic medalists, too. They moved up to joint-second in the table, alongside perennial champions New Zealand with 28 points, 12 behind pacesetters Australia.
“It was really tough and it’s Brazil, it always rains at night and I’m glad we put that wet-weather strategy into play and got the win”.
