Women’s track & field: Kwaza takes 26th at Olympic Trials

The Broadneck High graduate and former Capital Gazette Athlete of the Year is one step away from a berth on his second Olympic team.

OR wide receiver Devon Allen kept his Olympic dream alive Friday at the U.S. Olympic Trials, advancing to Saturday’s semifinals by winning his first-round heat in the 110-meter hurdles event with a time of 13.44 seconds.

The Kansas City, Kan., native placed third in her heat with a time of 12.93 to secure the final automatic qualifying spot into the 21-person semifinal.

“I just got to keep my mind calm, worry about what I got to focus on”. The trip marked their second visit in a month to Eugene after competing in the NCAA national championships in June.

Kara Winger is in first place after the qualifying round with a toss of 61.42 meters.

The semifinals and finals will be run on Friday.

“I’m already motivated”, Bowie said. “I definitely want to represent the United States of America”. In Friday’s semifinals, he took an early lead and then stayed just off the leader’s shoulder for the rest of the race, completing the race in 3 minutes, 44.29 seconds. If Bowie advances, she’ll run in the Finals at 7:11 p.m. Sunday night.

On Saturday, eight of 18 competitors will advance to the finals: the top two finishers in each of three heats, plus the next two fastest times. She was joined by Maggie Malone as the only throws to eclipse the 60-meter mark.

Hannah Carson (javelin) will join Osaghae as the two Red Raiders in action on Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m. from Eugene, Oregon.
