Woods commits to play at Wyndham Championship

“We’re going to have days where it’s like this and I’ve had the flip side of it too“, he said. “I made it abundantly clear our intentions”. After he shot 3-over-par 75 Thursday, placing himself in danger of missing the cut for a third successive major, he used the oldest line in the book: “It’s golf“. Woods has five holes to play in the suspended second round of the PGA Championship, at Whistling Straits and is 4 over par. Woods simply entered the tournament by the Friday night deadline, but the word “committed” is the official term. But these commitments are not binding.

The prospect of episodes like that have been golf’s worst nightmare since he ignited the sport with his 1997 Masters triumph.

He is now ranked 186th in the standings, and only the top 125 make it. Chances are, he won’t do anything to improve his standing this week. Woods had a microdiscectomy in late March 2014 and by all rights he likely should have gone to the sidelines for a minimum of six months.

After watching Woods’ heroic performance, I decided to give the sport of golf another try. “But the year’s not”, he added, referring to European Tour events and other tournaments around the world before the end of the year.

Woods was asked about his remaining schedule after an opening-round 75.

He posted his worst round as a professional, an 85 at the Memorial tournament in June, and he has since missed the cut at both the U.S. Open and British Open – the first time in his career he has done so at consecutive major championships. His putting got a little bit better. After two early birdies Friday, he double-bogeyed the fourth hole, then bogeyed the eighth. Play is scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. ET.

Woods suggested two weeks ago at the Quicken Loans National that he would consider playing the Wyndham, the last regular-season event before the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs, depending on how he played this week at Whistling Straits.

But players must advance through the various stages of the playoffs.

“Well, I hit it great today, but I made actually nothing”, the 39-year-old said after carding five bogeys and two birdies on a morning when 25 players dipped below par. The top 125 qualify for The Barclays, with it being cut to 100 for the Deutsche Bank Championship, 70 for the BMW Championship and then 30 for the Tour Championship.
