Woods Says He Hopes to Return Next Month

Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson – they are all great golfers but they do not get the pulse racing like a scowling, spitting, surly Tiger Woods.

The golf star, who hasn’t played an event since August of 2015 thanks to multiple back surgeries and related ailments, announced on his website today that he hoped to make his return on October 13 at the Safeway Classic in Napa, California. That event is the first of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season.

Additionally, Tiger plans to play in the European Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open in early November, and the Hero World Challenge in December, which is Woods’ annual tournament to benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Woods, who hasn’t won a tournament since the WGC-Bridgeston Invitational in August of 2014, has been hampered by back and hip injuries that had been bothering him since 2015.

This year was the first since 1994 that Woods missed all four major championships, as he said his return would come when rehab reached a point where he was comfortable.

The 14-times major victor also said, depending on “my continued progress and recovery”, that he intends to compete at the Turkish Airlines Open in November and the Tiger Woods Foundation-run Hero World Challenge in December. “Whether I can play depends on my continued progress and recovery. My hope is to have my game ready to go”, Woods said on his official website.

The 14-time major champion stated that he was targeting his return at the Safeway Open in Napa, California, which starts from October 13.

“It could be a fun fall”, he added. Woods said he’s missed competing, but he’s enjoyed spending time with his children Sam and Charlie, and working on various projects including golf course design. But I missed competing. “I’ve been a pro about 20 years, and their support has never waned”.
