Woods tied for Wyndham lead

Tiger Woods lines up a putt on the 17th hole during the second round of the Wyndham Championship golf tournament in Greensboro, N.C., Friday, August 21, 2015. His name is also pronounced “Hoagie” and so when Woods was asked if he had ever heard of him, or if he would recognize him, there was a amusing exchange. Tour rookie Hoge, in the last group of the day, birdied the 18th to make it a three-way tied for the lead.

The highlight of his round was a 10-foot eagle at the par-five 15th.

PGA Tour rookie Tom Hoge, born in North Carolina but raised in sparsely-populated North Dakota, earned a third-round pairing with the 14-times major champion at Sedgefield.

Followed by an admiring gallery, Woods hit some shots of the highest quality on Friday, but also some poor ones, including a two-iron off the 10th tee that he pulled so badly he was lucky to avoid some trees 150 yards away. “My pace, I felt like I could be aggressive”, Woods said.

“Contrary to popular belief, I’m still a good golfer“, joked Gore, who was playing so badly a couple of years ago he was ready to quit and take a coaching job.

“When it’s like this”, Woods said, “you’ve got to throw darts and go low”. He honestly did not have any idea who his co-leader in the tournament is, the guy he’ll meet for the first time Saturday in a paring of the 315th-ranked and 286th-ranked players in the world. He started the day on the back nine and didn’t waste any time asserting himself. The 56-year-old Mize, the 1987 Masters champion, won the 2010 Montreal Championship for his lone title on the 50-and-over tour.

Even more importantly, the putts are finally falling in the hole, as Woods has made 12 birdies to just three bogeys. It was fortunate that Woods still had a prayer of making the Playoffs, because Greensboro is giving him everything he needed.

“Obviously, a new position for me”, Hoge said. A flawless putting performance on the back nine yielded five more birdies to leave him tied for fifth on nine-under heading into the weekend.

AALBORG, Denmark (AP) – England’s David Horsey shot 3-under 38 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the European Tour Made in Denmark tournament. At 114th on the FedEx Cup points list, Compton is likely to stay in the top 125 and qualify for the lucrative playoffs starting next week, and a good start here did not hurt his cause.

He finished his round with back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, closing by sinking a 50-foot putt.
