For the first time since 2004, the hockey world is prepping for the World Cup of Hockey. It featured some of the best and deepest lineups from around the world, leading to some of the greatest hockey games ever played and some of the greatest rosters ever assembled. “Now, we get three exhibition games and then it’s game on at the highest level you’re going to see probably until springtime”.

The US are due to entertain Canada in their first of three pre-tournament games today.

American center David Backes, who played in Vancouver and Sochi, added that it could help the sport to be associated with a big event like the Olympics. Perry did a pretty good job of making sure he mixed it up and started a scrum to end the second period that was typical of the way the night went between these two rivals.

With Crosby out, Patrice Bergeron moved to centre with Brad Marchand on the left, while Tyler Seguin saw time early but didn’t stay there.

“You talk about playing for your country and having that honor, but until you’re actually doing it, you can’t quite get the feeling back”, he said. “It’s just getting that intensity, getting that playoff feel to it”.

John Tavares scored twice – both on the power play – while Matt Duchene, Jay Bouwmeester and Logan Couture also chipped in with singles.

Team Europe’s training camp got off to a slow start because numerous players were engaged in Olympic qualifying games in Europe.

Canada is not flawless by any stretch of the imagination and there is plenty of work to be done in the next few days.

“Didn’t feel too good (when he woke up)”, said Giroux, who left the game briefly Friday. I don’t think it’s going to be that one guy just didn’t deserve to play.

“There is rust coming out of the summer, were hitting goalposts, missing open nets and everything was there (Friday) but the finishing. We know he’s a really good player, great kid.

Besides, you never know when an underdog team beats the odds in a tournament like this and makes some unexpected noise – like Switzerland’s silver-medal showing at the 2013 IIHF world championship or Iceland’s run to the soccer quarter-finals at this year’s European Championship.

But that’s really what Team USA was assembled to do, win against a more skilled team like Canada through physical grinding play, and they executed their game plan well. But led by consummate professionals and team players in the Sedin twins, the Swedes will do their best not to be trifled with. Much is made of experience in high-pressure athletics, but this team which many have labeled as a gimmick could knock that notion by the wayside if youthful stars like Connor McDavid, Johnny Gaudreau, Jack Eichel and Aaron Ekblad can turn in top notch performances. They’ve already split a pair of pre-tournament games in preparation for the World Cup, and their intense rivalry was on full display.

But for others, while the joy of getting back on the ice was still evident, there were other things they were looking to accomplish before the games actually count. He netted 12 points in 26 games and logged big minutes as the postseason went on. They just need to find a way to stop the Americans “win at all costs” style of play, don’t get suckered into it, and get the goalies warmed up before next weekend.
