World Egg Day Observed across the world

World Egg Day was celebrated on October 9, 2015 across the world in various countries and various types of Egg Food festivals were held on the occasion. Such issues were brought to the notice of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu during the National Egg Coordination Committee’s World Egg Day celebrations conducted here on Friday.A.P. Poultry Federation president Sundar Naidu wanted the Government to bail out the poultry sector from losses by taking up different measures.

As decided by the Union Government, the 20th World Egg Day was celebrated in four cities of the country- Bhubaneswar, Lucknow, Mumbai and Vijayawada.

The theme of the programme, held in Lagos is “Benefits of Eating One Egg a Day by the Nigerian Child”. A run is also being organised on the occasion. Important dignitaries from South India are being invited to take part in the celebrations. The celebrations included contests in making egg-based preparations with participation from hoteliers, students and the people.

Andhra Pradesh stood second after Tamil Nadu in production of eggs by producing 1,309.59 crore eggs in 2014-15. 75 % of the total eggs produced in Andhra Pradesh are from four major districts that are, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur.

Also speaking, Dr Olajide Basorun, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, said that the state presently produces about 500,000 eggs daily.

“Eggs are the best follow up to breast milk in children as they contain the richest mix of essential amino acids”.

The stakeholders which include: farmers, students, markets and egg merchants expressed the believe that that an egg has many nutritional benefits like protein, vitamins, and cholesterol, which can reduce the risks of heart diseases. They also wanted the Government to entrust the job of supplying eggs to schools and Anganwadi centres directly to farmers associations or farmers, without calling tenders.

“In the same light, the Harvard School of Public Health published that moderate egg consumption which is defined as one egg per day is not associated with increased risk of heart disease and does not have a negative impact on cholesterol neither does it affect a person’s lipid profile”.

The egg, which comes in a unique shell of its own, is the only farm product that can not be adulterated.
