On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it has been 42 days since the last person in Guinea confirmed to have the disease tested negative for Ebola virus for a second time. More than 2,500 people had died in Guinea from Ebola.

There were more than 3,800 Ebola cases in Guinea out of more than 28,600 cases globally with 11,300 deaths, according to figures from the WHO.

Now, it went on to say, the West African country enters a 90-day period of heightened surveillance to make sure that any new cases are identified and treated quickly. Sierra Leone was declared free from transmissions on November 7.

Strong recent growth has been curtailed in Guinea and while Liberia has resumed growth, Sierra Leone is facing a severe recession, according to the World Bank, which has mobilised $1.62 billion for Ebola response and recovery efforts. “I commend the governments, communities and partners for their determination in confronting this epidemic to get to this milestone”. Both countries have been declared ebola free.

This West African nation will hold a major celebration Wednesday, overseen by President Alpha Conde and including testimonies by Ebola survivors. Liberia is poised to reach that status on Jan 14.

The statement observed that among the challenges survivors had faced was that after recovering from Ebola virus disease and cleared from their bloodstream, it might persist in the semen of some male survivors for as long as 9-12 months.

“The coming months will be absolutely critical”, said Dr. Bruce Aylward, Special Representative of the WHO Director-General for the Ebola Response.

No scientist likes to say something is 100 percent effective, but Dr. John-Arne Røttingen of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said, “Based on the number of individuals and the number of cases that we have seen, there is 100 percent protection in those vaccinated” against Ebola.

There’s also the psychological issues and trauma that come in the wake of such tragic events, not to mention the stigma that some survivors still face. “We hope that all the dead and the victims of this disease will be sacrifices to the Guinean nation so that no other epidemic touches us”, said survivor Ibrahima Sow.

“In the event that new cases appeared in Liberia or Sierra Leone now, a decision to return a country to the “enhanced-screening” list would be made after CDC experts assess how that country responds to and controls new cases, as well as after discussion and agreement among leaders of USA government agencies”, she said.

Last year, researchers reported that patient zero of the outbreak was likely a 2-year-old Guinean child, Emile Ouamouno, who lived in the village of Meliandou.
