After a person in Dallas was confirmed to have contracted the Zika virus through sex, us health officials are warning men who travel to countries where Zika is spreading to take steps to prevent spreading the virus through sex.
WA Health chief health officer Tarun Weeramanthri said there was no risk to people who had not recently travelled to a Zika-affected country.
While the virus causes mild symptoms in adults, it has been linked to birth defects in babies born to Zika-infected women.
The guidelines recommend pregnant women be offered testing two to 12 weeks after returning home.
The virus causes a greater impact on expectant mothers and women who want to get pregnant.
“We are closely monitoring the possible spread of the virus particularly from Latin America to other regions”, the UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehim stated. “And the hope is that we can keep control of the mosquitoes here so that people won’t have as much to worry about in the United States”, said Dr. Patricia Larue from Methodist Dallas Medical Center. There is no vaccine or specific medicine to treat Zika virus infections.
The World Health Organization has declared the spike in serious birth defects an worldwide emergency and launched a global Zika response unit. One of the 2016 cases affected a pregnant woman.
Researcher Rafael Franca has been studying Zika closely for the past year at a laboratory in Recife.
The ministry says the number of cases diagnosed so far are within expectations and do not pose a risk for the virus to be spread in Spain. That usually happens within one week of being exposed to the virus, according to the health department.
The CDC website now lists 30 countries and territories where active Zika virus transmission is taking place.

Scientists at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, a public health institute, said they analyzed the samples and used partial genome sequencing to identify the virus.
