World mourns police dog killed in Saint Denis raids

Across social media under the Twitter hashtag #JeSuisChien (meaning I am a dog), Diesel’s death sparked a wave of mourning.

Pet owners uploaded photos of their dogs with a small French flag, donned in tricolors, or with a note with the said hashtags, making it viral.

French authorities tweeted the sad news Wednesday that the police dog was killed in the line of duty during the early morning raid in Saint-Denis.

The Russian government is offering to send a puppy to France in honor of a police dog named “Diesel” that was killed during an anti-terror raid in Paris last week.

A subsequent tweet underlined the importance of dogs such as Diesel in raids by police.

The National Police announced on Twitter that Diesel “was killed by terrorists in the current operation” and posted a photo of her emphasizing how important she was to the mission.

The 7-year-old Belgian shepherd was killed last night in a firefight between police and Isis militants suspected to be behind the Paris attacks on Saturday.

The Saint-Denis raid was part of a nationwide manhunt targeting suspects Abdelhamid Abaaoud and Salah Abdeslam. Police officials have since confirmed that five people from the apartment were taken alive and arrested.
